Deep tissue uses some of the same techniques as Swedish massage but focuses on the deeper muscles and connective tissues and generally uses more pressure. Deep tissue should never hurt but may be more uncomfortable then the Swedish style. Everyone has a different tolerance for pain and you should always let the therapist know if the pressure needs adjusting. Massages range in time 5 to 30 minutes in length usually in 5 minute increments. It can be a great introduction for someone not sure if massage is right for them or are uncomfortable undressing for a table style massage. Friction, Direct pressure and other techniques are used to target the injured area and provide treatment. The therapist will perform a body evaluation with the client to help formulate a treatment plan. Depending on the location of the area, treatment can be performed on a table or sometimes sitting in a chair. The client will be draped or clothed depending on the area needing treatment. Sessions are usually in 15 minute increments and can range in length from as short as 15 minutes to an hour or longer.
Reiki is a Japanese technique that uses Ki which translates to “life force energy”. This will help to relax and reduce stress relief which will promote the body’s natural healing abilities. During a session the client remains fully clothed. Because it is an energy technique and not muscle manipulation it can be used on almost any client. Session lengths are usually 30, 60, or 90 minutes long.
